June 28 - 30. Join us on Peaks Island, ME for a long weekend of Greenlandic paddling skills and their application to moderate sea conditions. Most traditional paddlers work hard on their rolling and recovery skills. This weekend will continue to develop this Holy Grail of sea kayaking while layering in your understanding of the wonders of the sea by expanding your seamanship, your application of skills to the sea.

Sat and Sun AM will involve group work connecting our traditional blades through the body to our boats. Afternoons, we will break into smaller groups to work on flat water rolling with Cheri, rougher water rolling and strokes with Turner, and seamanship with Tom using either traditional or euro blades. Friday is designed for those of you seeking a personal tune up, an extra day of work on boat control, and even smaller sessions with Cheri and Turner. Group size for the weekend will be capped at 8 or 12.

Cheri and Turner are partners in Kayak Ways LLC, a venture based on the notion that the traditional kayaking skills of the Inuit seal catchers offer valuable lessons for the modern day recreational kayaker. For the last 6 years, Cheri and Turner have traveled far and wide teaching these uniquely consistent and practical kayaking skills.

Tom Bergh founded Maine Island Kayak Co in the 1980s with an emphasis on developing our ability to go to sea, to understand and paddle the wide variety of conditions and textures that the sea offers.

Sat and Sun sessions will involve a morning seamanship briefing, followed by a yoga warm up, and group skills development using traditional blades. Afternoons will allow you to choose more individual work with Cheri and Turner or with Tom on sea skills, furthering your Greenlandic (or Euro) paddling development, and short journeys into appropriate conditions for your skill set and interests.

We do expect our euro-blade paddlers to work with the traditional paddles. We encourage those ready to participate in paddling in a variety of conditions while we play in our light currents and ocean swell. Develop your Greenlandic paddling expertise and your seamanship, along with your understanding of planning out a worthy journey for the day or the week.
