New England Intermediate Rough Water Symposium
Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA
June 11-13, 2010

What do the following coaches and paddlers all have in common?

Nigel Dennis, Jen Kleck, Fiona Whitehead, Phil Eccles, Phil Clegg, Simon Osborne, Billy Stark, Peter Casson, Cheri & Turner, Harry Whelan, Greg Paquin, Rick Stoehrer, Paula Riegel, Ciro de la Vega, Carl Tjerandsen, Nick Schade, and Tom Bergh?

We are all meeting at the NE Intermediate Rough Water Symposium in Pt Judith, RI on Thurs, June 10th for 3 days of on-water workshops & instruction in tidal streams, rock gardens and surfing with a bit of new BCU 4 and 5 Star.  See NE Intermediate Rough Water Symposium 2010. http://www.maineislandkayak.com/symposium.html

This list includes four BCU Level 5 Coaches, Level 3 and 4 BCU Coaches, a Greenland Rolling Champion, ACA Open Water Instructors, a pile of BCU 5 Star Leaders, world expeditioners and NDK Pro Paddlers.

But the real reason I invite them? They are supportive, strong, creative and gifted instructors who are all about you, not themselves. They are super at modeling best practice and providing you with a baseline to continue developing your paddling.

So come get a paddle wet with us. Three days of intermediate, bumpy & lumpy water coaching, catered meals together in the dining hall, tenting and cabins next to group showers, quiet walks along relaxing fields, evening gatherings around a beach fire on the warm shores of Camp Fuller in RI, awards ceremony and product drawings, paddling shows. Come learn with these pros, help build our paddling community, Share Tall Tales.

We are seeking to help put friendly, supportive, encouraging, positive into our paddling community, which is why we ask for a 3 day commitment from you all. This is not some foolish, cowboy, testosterone-poisoned event for the Big Dogs, they should go follow these coaches through Penryn Mahr on Springs. Instead the RWS is for the committed paddler, looking to get better with a solid group of first rate coaches and guides.

Until then…

Hi Rough Water Symposium Paddlers Past and Future,                                              Feb 2010

We are excited to again offer the Northeast Intermediate Rough Water Symposium (RWS)  outside Point Judith, RI on Friday, June 11 to Sunday June 13, 2010. It will again be based out of Camp Fuller where (this year) nearly all of us can bunk in cabins, have a post paddling shower, all while sharing great home cooked meals and a chance to connect to our paddling community. We have access to both flood and ebb tides each day, and the sea state should be livelier in June. It will be the long, lazy days of early summer, fewer power boaters competing for space…and a chance to get prepared for the upcoming paddling season. Nigel Dennis and alarge number of his strong Pro paddlers will be in full force along w our top notch Fishers Race Team members. You’ll note some new coach faces that we think will keep you on the front edge of your seat. You’ll see new offerings of Incident Management, Core Paddling and Short Boat Surfing. But our emphasis remains on rock gardens, long boat surfing and tidal races, along with continued commitment to building our paddling clubs & community. We will have a BCU 4 Star Sea Leader training and 5 Star Tidal Training module.

At this point we do know that:
-We will have TWO good tides to access each day.
            - A lumpier sea state will increase the Fun-Fear factor of rock gardens and surfing.
            - Camp Fuller will again allow us to eat and sleep together in one great facility on the harbor; and our imported chef will be keeping us healthy and full with real home made style meals.
            - Nigel Dennis and his group of strong Pro paddlers will be here in force, some old some new...and some ringers.
            - Our excellent local coaches of Billy and Peter, Greg and Paula, Rick and Ciro, Cheri and Turner, Nick and Carl along with others currently in flux...

We appreciate your strong support in years past. Info on 2010 is going up now as available, and as always, prior RWS paddlers will have first dibs on signing up. I believe this switch will make for an even better event; we hope you'll consider joining us. Hey, put it on your calendar!
